Three Colts, Three Trainers, Three Days

When presented with the idea by two different friends to put on a colt starting competition the wheels started turning. With lots of planning and the help of a wonderful committee, the dream of the “Horseman’s Mission” came true. Whether it’s starting a colt, improving you’re riding, or teaching your horse new things. The Horseman’s mission is here to help support and educate other horse lovers on how to go to the next level with their horses.

So if you enjoy leaning about horsemanship, spending time with great clinicians and trainers, and enjoy being in a family friendly atmosphere, don’t miss out on this event!

How the Colt Starting Event Works

Each trainer has 11/2 hours per day to train his/her colt.
Each trainer is judged on horsemanship and finished performance by a panel of judges.
1st Place wins a saddle by JR Custom Saddlery

Our 2021 Colt Starters

Michael Mast
Dundee, OH

“My wife, Emily, and I live near Dundee, Ohio. As far as a job goes, I am fortunate and grateful to work in the family business. In whatever time we have left, we enjoy living outdoors, riding horses, and the ag lifestyle. We’ve got about 2 acres here at the house and barn, but are fortunate to be able to rent some pasture up the road from us. There we run a few cows and raise some beef. I got involved with horses through my Grandpa. He worked with a lot of problem horses, and tried to see things from the horses’ unique perspective. I enjoy the challenge in working different horses that are all unique in their own way. We don’t live on a large cattle ranch by any means, but working cows on horses is something we are always eager to do. It gives purpose and meaning to any training we do in the arena, and going up against a hard nosed cow every now and then is always good for both man and beast! Haha… HAPPY TRAILS!”

She gives lessons and clinics working with both the horse and rider to improve communication and help them reach their goals. In 2018 MaryBeth went through Josh Lyons Accreditation program which spurred her on to compete in the reining industry and work with more performance horses.

She is honored with the opportunity to compete in this years Horseman’s Mission, colt starting competition and looks forward to being with you soon.

Joseph Miller
Valley Ranch, Baltic, OH

“I consider myself horseman in progress, starting on a bareback pony in approximately 2002 that Grandpa bought out of Mt. Hope at the regular monthly sale.

I live in Fresno, OH with my wife, Mary Esther, and our 3 children. We are just getting started in raising quarter horses. I love to see a rough rebellious horse transform into a reliable partner that is trustworthy. I’m not a professional, but truly believe that God has no need for us humans to beat an animal into a productive tool/machine, just because we’re upset or ignorant of a better way to connect to an animal. Sharing with each other from different experiences is one of the best ways I know of that will help and teach our family, neighbors, and friends of a better way.

To God be the glory the Glory, Honor, and Thankfulness in everything; Amen

– Joseph
